DELTA AS 4TH LARGEST ECONOMY: WISHFUL THINKING OR EMU'S DELUSION
At the 2025 Public Lecture and Awards Ceremony of the Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN) Delta State Chapter held 20th March in Asaba,
Kingsley Emu, Secretary to Delta State Government, claimed in his keynote speech that Delta ranks 4th largest economy among Nigerian states.
By what criteria did this Kingsley Emu measure this blind rating? How did he source and arrive at the blind data he used to rate Delta as the 4th largest economy in Nigeria?
In terms of infrastructure, Delta doesn't merit it. In terms of unemployment, Delta ranks among states with highest level in a country where graduates of universities and Polytechnics now engage in Keke riding as only means of survival.
Healthcare in Delta is pathetic. The state hospitals are running below standard. On education, the state of the primary schools are appalling with buildings dilapidated. Precisely on Friday 21st March, 2025 some wooden desks were provided at the Orhowhe Primary School in Edjophe/Iwhrekan and Ughievwen Model Primary School, Otughievwen .
The quality of the chairs reflects how depraved and heartless the state officeholders are. The desks will give up in a matter of weeks. They were deliberately not meant to last, from the annoying quality of materials used and the cut and nail finishing.
As I speak the Orhowhe Primary School buildings remain dilapidated with most of the roofs blown out. Few months ago a public school building collapsed in Ewu Town and killed a pupil.
Most roads linking towns in Delta have collapsed. The popular Udu-Ughievwem Road down to NEPA and to Okpare through Ovwor to Ughelli is in a bad shape. One would have thought Governor Sheriff Oborevwori should embark on turning the busy road to dual carriage but this is not seen.
Instead what you find is the state government buying beggarly awards on false claims, including having a faceless body of professionals lying that Delta is 4th largest economy.
Osubi Airstrip Runway which is in Governor Oborevwori's home town has not been expanded. This Osubi Airstrip, if properly upgraded to a standard Airport, will improve on the economy of Delta state. One would have thought by now Oborevwori would have liaised with Festus Keyamo who is Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister to embark on the expansion of Osubi to a standard Airport.
The Osubi Airstrip is dormant with few flights landing and taking off due to non-upgrade of the Runway to enable big aircrafts land and take off. As we speak other states are building independent power stations but Delta with abundant natural gas has no plan to build independent power stations near the sources of natural gas in UTOROGU which gives the state much comparative cost advantage.
If Kingsley Emu has nothing to say about Delta poor economy he should keep silent rather than making speeches that are coated with packs of lies. Kidnapping is increasingly is on the rise as insecurity worsens.
Under Oborevwori as Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, an anti-open grazing law was passed and signed into law. Now at the helms of the State Executive, Oborevwori can't execute the law he passed as Speaker. It proves the law was just playing to the gallery and the law remains cosmetic with armed herders maiming, killing in Delta and worsening food insecurity.
Recently 5 local farmers were killed by suspected herdsmen in Ohoror, Agadama Bush of Uwherun clan in Ughelli North LGA. Insecurity everywhere in Delta. Kingsley Emu, keep your mouth shut and stop misleading the public with packs of lies on economy of Delta state.
Go to other states and see progress and development physically seen on ground and not wishful thinking. When the economy improves, it shows glaringly. Delta has the highest federal allocation that is not seen on ground but seen in fleet of cars and mansions owned by political officeholders and their appointees.
All of them in Delta that display illegal wealth from Delta state's public treasury, I challenge them to tell the public the source of their ill-gotten wealth.
Delta as 4th largest economy, 'na witch dey worry una'?
