WARNING SIGNS OF WHAT TO COME IF DELTA STATE POLITICIANS CONTINUE WITH THEIR BAD GOVERNANCE
The linked video, which has gone viral, like many others like it, on different social media platforms, is that of the Niger State Governor, being prevented from leaving an event, and near mobbed by his constituents’ as they shouted “Barawo, Barawo…” (meaning Thief, Thief… in Hausa language).
For us, we believe this is just a tip of the iceberg of things to come, if our Nigerian politicians, specifically Delta State politicians at all levels continue with their bad-governance, misappropriation and mismanagement of our collective national wealth meant to improve the standard of living of all and sundry in the country.  Specifically, we would like to admonish the Governors in the Niger-Delta region to learn from these recent happenings, and perhaps change their misguided ways and strive to prevent it from happening to them. They might think that this will never happen to them, but they should not be deluded or deceived to think that Nigerians in their various States of the region, are not fed-up with their lies, failed promises, gross corruption and insensitivity to the plight and sufferings of the masses. When a man or a people are pushed to the wall, especially after ‘enduring’ all the maltreatment, it is a matter of time for them to ‘react’ aggressively against those shortchanging their future in the corridors of political power.
The simple and only solution to prevent what we saw in the video from happening to the politicians of the Niger Delta region, is to ensure ‘good governance’ and delivering their campaign promises by putting in place, the required infrastructures where they are needed most by the people and not based of political schemes, which would better the lot of Nigerians. It is when Niger Delta politicians start providing a safe environment where there will be sustainable peace and development, which would in-turn attract foreign and domestic investments; that the possibility of what we see in the linked video will not happen.
Few weeks ago, the Delta State Government spent hundreds-millions of naira of public money, on mere merriment in the name of having a supposed ‘Grand Reception’ to welcome James Ibori, the former Delta State governor who admitted in a UK court to have stolen the State’s funds and was sent to a UK prison for it. And we were marveled at their public display of absurdity without any iota of shame or even regard for the masses in Delta State who are daily faced with traumatizing hardship and hunger. Agreed, that many of these people who seem to show them support in their display of shame, do not really have a choice as many are ‘driven by poverty’. But that does not mean that the people are not angry at the deplorable state of lives, and as such, we are certain they will one day ‘react aggressively’ and shame these political thieves’ in public like what happened in Niger State.
Former American President, Abraham Lincoln, in one of his famous quote, once said: “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.” Bringing this back home to Delta state, we believe governor Ifeanyi Okowa should learn from the incident that happened in the linked video with the Niger State governor and strive to prevent it from happening. That means the Delta State governor needs to embark on massive infrastructural projects and provide a safe environment for both private and public business investors. Okowa should shun praise singers and sycophants who are only after their stomach and insatiable greed and start executing the genuine desires of the people.
The Niger Delta politicians, specifically the State governors, should repent from using public wealth to organize merriments and politically-related parties for politicians for whatever political reason, and refusing to genuinely develop the State, but start doing the right things in the sight of God. They should stop misappropriating and channeling public money to unviable and unsustainable projects. Rather, they should daily strive to eradicate the enormous poverty in the land. Truth is, if the politicians in Delta State were doing what was expected of them in the area of governance, Delta State would be like the Dubai of the country. If the enormous wealth and resources accrued to Delta State all these years, were genuinely used for the purpose they were meant for, we are certain the State won’t be where it is today.
