THE URGENT NEED TO REVERT/RETURN THE DECISION OF PLACING THE OVWIAN-ALADJA POLICE DIVISION NOW UNDER BURUTU AREA COMMAND, TO ITS ORIGINAL WARRI OR UGHELLI AREA COMMANDS
We consider it expedient to draw the attention of relevant authorities in the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), on the subject matter, and request that it be addressed urgently, so as to prevent unnecessary 'administrative bottlenecks' and efficiency/effectiveness of the said Ovwian-Aladja Police Division in the fight against crime, and also, most importantly, to avoid rocking the boat and carrying out acts that have the propensity to instil animosity, create an apprehensive atmosphere between and within the locals staying within these areas of Delta State.
For those who do not know, Udu LGA is a local government in the Urhobo area, which is also known as Delta Central. The entire Udu Kingdom today were formerly under the Western Division in Orerokpe, and later under Okpe LGA. But it was during the late Gen. Sani Abacha era, that Udu LGA was created. In other words, Traditionally and Administratively, Udu LGA is in the Heart of Delta Central (Urhobo). And as such, under the Nigerian Police Force Administrative Jurisdiction, Udu LGA had been under the Ughelli Area Command. Ughelli is in Urhobo area of Delta Central. So, administratively, Ughelli Town is the Administrative Head of Delta Central. But few years ago, because of proximity and nearness, the Ovwian-Aladja Police Division (which is Ovwian-Aladja Police Divisional Headquarters), was placed under the Warri Area Command for effective and convenient policing.
Surprisingly now, the said Ovwian-Aladja Police Division has been placed under the Burutu Area Command. Burutu is an Ijaw local government area. It has no relationship, either in proximity/nearness, and administratively/politically with Udu LGA. Apart from being in the same Delta State, Burutu LGA (an Ijaw area) has nothing in common with Udu LGA (an Urhobo area), in terms of culture, ways of life and traditions. So, the said placement of the Ovwian-Aladja Police Division in Burutu LGA, is seen by the people as another 'oppression' that did not take into consideration the existing differences between the two areas in question.
It is apparent that the relevant authorities of the NPF did not make the necessary inquisitions and consultations with the locals/stakeholders of the said Areas in question before such a decision, which has the propensity to stir up apprehension and create more division amongst the people, was taken from Abuja.
We are therefore urging that the said decision should be reverted immediately, and the Ovwian-Aladja Police Division returned back to either the Warri Area Command or the Ughelli Area Command. This is because Udu LGA and Ughelli South LGA have similar cultures, ways of life and traditions. Unlike Burutu LGA that has no common relationship with Udu LGA, which is home to the said Ovwian-Aladja Police Division. This subject issue should be given the needed attention and addressed as advised, especially now that it has not raised any dust.
