THE NEED FOR MORE ATTENTION BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND SECURITY OPERATIVES TO ADDRESS THE SCARCELY-REPORTED KILLINGS IN ZAMFARA STATE
It is with great displeasure and disgust that we wholeheartedly condemn the unrecorded killings in Zamfara State for quite some time now, but sadly which the Nigerian media is not giving any coverage about, neither is the Federal Government and security operatives saying or doing anything to stop it. Even the Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, has recently accused security agencies in the country of failing to prevent killings in his State despite alerting them about an impending attack 24 hour before the recent invasion of communities in Zurmi Local Government Area of the State, which resulted in the death of 39 persons.
It is also appalling that the Federal Government is not telling the truth about the insecurity situation in Zamfara State, neither is the Government allowing Nigerians to know exactly the insecurity situation over there. It was only recently that the Zamafara State Governor noted that security agencies in the area failed to tackle the problem of “cross-border banditry and terrorism affecting communities in the area.”
In the words of the Governor, “I feel let down facing the people of this State whenever I remember the promise I made to them that if they elected President Muhammadu Buhari into power, these killings would end. But unfortunately, things are now getting worse.” For this very recent attack, the Emir of Zurmi, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, said if not for the bravery of vigilante groups who confronted the bandits, more people would have been killed. It was also noted that these terrorists are known, as their hideout is in a village called Kagara, very close to Bafarawa in Sokoto State, and a few kilometers from Shinkafi in Zamfara State. But it was noted that despite several appeals to security agencies to storm the area, their appeals have failed.
This makes one to wonder and ask if Zamfara State is no longer part of Nigeria or what? How come nobody is saying anything about the killings that have been going on there unreported? How come the security operatives have suddenly gone silent and missing in action in addressing the insecurity situation in Zamfara State? Why should criminals be allowed to be killing people as if they are animals and both the Federal government and the Security operatives are carefree about it.
We know that there are a lot of security challenges in Nigeria. But should we allow human beings to be killed like animals in the country and no one is doing anything to stop it? This can't be allowed to continue.
We strongly urge that the same attention, recently being given to the insecurity situations in Benue State, be accorded to Zamfara State and let this blood bath be abruptly put to a stop.
