THE URGENT NEED TO ADDRESS THE UNSAFE AND DANGEROUS STATE ON THE ONGOING UDU ROAD AT THE RAILWAY “FLYOVER BRIDGE” IN UDU LGA, DELTA STATE
We consider it necessary to draw the attention of the Federal Government, Federal Ministry of Works, and Management Authorities of Julius Berger, to the observed oversight, unsafe and dangerous state of the ongoing construction of the Udu Road railway bridge, in Udu Local Government Area, Delta State. The said Udu road “flyover bridge” on top of the railway line is best described as a death trap waiting to happen, if allowed to be completed the way it is currently being constructed by Julius Berger. The Udu road railway bridge is as high like a mountain.
The way the said bridge is being constructed, it does not slope well to easily allow motorists to climb/drive on top safely, when it is completed. And we wonder why the builders made the said bridge to be so high up. The Contractor awarded the construction of the bridge is Julius Berger, which is known for the construction of good bridges and infrastructure in places like Lagos and Abuja. So, we really do not understand why they are constructing the said Udu road bridge with such disregard for its safety and easy-usage by Nigerians in Delta State? All the vehicles working on site at the Udu road railway bridge are owned by Julius Berger, so it is without a doubt that it is Julius berger that is constructing it. I have not seen that kind of a 'mountain-of-bridge' before. Motorcycles, Tricycles (Keke), lorries and heavy duty vehicles with loads, will not be able to climb such a bridge when completed.
It is a very unsafe public infrastructure. And it is unlike other Julius Berger civil construction projects across the country. The Federal Government, Federal Ministry of Works should act fast to ask the Contractor - Julius Berger to do a proper, and well-sloped bridge that will be safe and convenient for motorists, motorcycles, Keke, and heavy duty vehicles to use. The said “flyover bridge” is a Federal Government project, and should be treated as such. We do not know why Julius Berger Engineers and the relevant Federal government authorities should design such an unsafe bridge that will be dangerous for motorists to use? We urge that this issue should be given the needed attention before it is too late.
