PROMOTING URHOBO CULTURE, MUSIC WITH PRIDE: KUDOS TO JUDE 'KAKPO' KAKPOVBIA

I saw this trending videos online of Urhobo born Jude 'Kakpo' Kakpovbia and co at different events in Canada, Ireland, Australia, US, France, showcasing Afro culture of the popular 'EMA' dance.

That is worth encouraging, much unlike the scenes that were shared Saturday 20th July 2024, on an online video of Urhobo Association of Washington DC (UAWDC) members in an Urhobo Annual Summer Picnic at Walton Park Drive, Upper Marlboro Maryland, USA dancing to Igbo and Yoruba music in an Urhobo gathering.

Spontaneously I wrote a response titled 'Critical Caution To Urhobos in Diaspora', condemning such self mockery or display of inferiority complex.

I am proud of Jude 'Kakpo' Kakpovbia for promoting Urhobo culture in Western countries on full Urhobo 'Ema' attires. I don't know him but I have seen some of his video clips showcasing our African culture.

Some are shy to sing or dance to their cultural music. Most of Urhobo elites believe Urhobo culture and music are inferior to the non Urhobos, so when I see any person showcasing his African music and culture I feel alright and good.

Western culture and religions have taken over our African culture. And it is insane

for our Urhobo people to be dancing to Yoruba and Igbo music in Urhobo gatherings. The Yoruba and Igbo people will never play Urhobo music in their gatherings.

If you don't promote your culture and religion then who will promote them for you. And if you don't fight your fight who will fight it for you according to Urhobo Voice Newspaper slogan.

Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), Urhobo Historical Society (UHS) and Urhobo Social Club need to recognise Jude 'Kakpo' Kakpovbia and his team as African and Urhobo ambassadors.

I am told Kakpo lives in Canada but very proud of his Urhobo 'Ema' dance. Other Urhobos in Nigeria and diaspora should emulate him and showcase Urhobo culture which is our heritage.
