ON THE KILLING OF JAMAL KHASHOGGI AND THE WAY WE SEE IT
The recent weeks have been filled with news across the globe of the circumstances surrounding the death of Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi Arabian journalist, and for us, it is evidently clear that it was a case of a State-sponsored murder, and there is need for world powers like the US, UK, and France to take decisive actions against the perpetrators of this act to serve as deterrent to others and also safeguard the interest of journalists and civil rights critics that are critical of any government.
For a man, to have been said to have been killed in an Embassy, is a great source of worry. Where then is safe in the world? If a place like an Embassy of a country is not safe, then where else should be considered safe, especially for critics and journalists/reporters. The Saudi Arabia authorities should be made to realize that, for allowing a murder to take place in their Embassy in Turkey, there have to face some severe repercussions because it shows that they can kill important diplomats and get away with it. Since the Saudi Arabia authorities have admitted that Khashoggi was killed in their Embassy in Turkey, they should tell the world those responsible for the killing and those behind it. They should tell the world where they kept his body after he was killed. Admitting to the killing of Khashoggi is not enough, but they should tell the world the killers, what led to the killing and why he was killed.
No life of a person is worth being taken by another person. The super world powers must put politics aside and take severe sanctions against the murderers of Khashoggi. It is even more appalling that after they killed him, they got rid of his body, as it still has not been found. Those who murdered Khashoggi and the people behind the killing should be severely punished.
With the reported broadcast of the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, while addressing his country’s Parliament, on the killing of Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul Turkey, it became more clearer that it was indeed a State organized crime, and there is the need for the reported 18 suspects be tried in war crime court in The Hague. Though, Saudi officials have continued to describe Khashoggi’s death as a “rogue operation” and a “tremendous mistake,” but the regime will continue to face harsh international criticism over this inhuman act, which should not go unpunished. The Turkish President has maintained that the killing of Khashoggi was planned and executed by the officials of Saudi Arabia. He also said that surveillance cameras were removed before he was killed in the said Embassy in Turkey.  President Donald Trump of the US, on his part, has described the murder of Khashoggi as a “worst cover-up”.
This is not a crime that was committed within a country but a crime that was obviously planned in Saudi Arabia and executed in another country. As such, it is a cross-border/trans-border high level crime that should be heard and tried by the International Crime Court. Even the Turkish President, Erdogan, has described the killing of Khashoggi in Istanbul as “very savage murder” which had been premeditated. While addressing his country's Parliament on the latest details about the death of Khashoggi at the Saudi Arabian Consulate in the Turkish capital on 2 October,2018, President Erdogan said: "To blame such an incident on a handful of security and intelligence members would not satisfy us or the international community…"Saudi Arabia has taken an important step by admitting the murder. As of now we expect of them to openly bring to light those responsible — from the highest ranked to the lowest — and to bring them to justice…."All evidence gathered shows that Jamal Khashoggi was the victim of a savage murder. To cover up such a savagery would hurt the human conscience."
The truth is that, for such a crime to take place in an Embassy, it is worth the concern of the United Nations. And if not properly handled, there is every tendency for the world to witness it being repeated. Come to think of it, is this Khashoggi murder in the Embassy of Saudi Arabia not described as terrorism? It is a high-level organized State trans-border crime that should be tried in a world crime Court. The said 18 suspects should be tried in as war crime Court. There is need to do justice over the killing of Khashoggi by carrying out a thorough investigation and have all the suspects charged to International Criminal Court of Justice. There is need to find answers to the big question of: who gave the instruction/order for the killing of Khashoggi in the said Embassy? All these need to be investigated to get to the bottom of this case.
