ON THE BLOODY AND ELECTION MALPRACTICE OF THE 2019 GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION IN DELTA STATE
Never have we witnessed such an election that was marred by violence and election malpractices of high proportions, like we did in Delta State in the just concluded March 9th 2019, Gubernatorial election. To the point that more than three persons (officially recorded) were murdered in cold blood. This is excluding the unofficial reports of killings and massive election atrocities that were committed by the Delta State PDP-led Government. To put it bluntly, the said Gubernatorial election in Delta State is the worst election ever conducted in Delta; where PDP thugs armed with weapons, had a field day as they snatched and burnt ballot papers and result sheets in APC strongholds, carried out over voting, vote buying, and other high-degree of election impunity.
We consider appalling that, in his bid to be re-elected as Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and his PDP supporters' desperation actually led to the death of Nigerian voters who only wanted to exercise their civic responsibility by coming out to vote. I was a personal witness to one that happened in Iwhrekan Jeremi Ward 1 Polling Unit in Ughelli South LGA, Delta State, where Mr. Ediri Usitaka Gbemre, who was just the second to the last person on queue to vote during the said Gubernatorial election on March 9th, 2019, as he was shot in the neck by alleged armed PDP thugs who invaded the said Polling Unit to snatch ballot boxes and election results that were going in favour of the APC, which they eventually burnt to ashes. The said Mr. Ediri Usitaka Gbemre was just a poor Community local trying to make ends meet and feed his family. But sadly, met his untimely unfortunate death in the hands of alleged armed PDP thugs. This is just one case of the sort of election atrocities the PDP Okowa led Government perpetrated across different Polling Units in Delta State Gubernatorial election, just to have their way with the election results. In some Polling Units, there were reports that some PDP Chieftains and elites even brandished their guns to scare/coerce and intimidate voters at Polling Units to vote for the PDP.
These “election malpractices of high-proportions” have been the trade and stock of the Delta State PDP since the last two decades. It is all they know how to do to be supposedly elected/re-elected into Delta State Government House. How can a Governor and his party be so desperate to grab political power by all means, even to the killing of voters? If this is how they only know how to re-ascend to Delta State Government House, then the general masses are really doomed. Why shed innocent blood just to grab political power that they will only enjoy for four years? Why share public funds meant for the development of basic infrastructure in the State, and use it for vote buying just to win an election? Why waste funds that would improve the lives and standard of living of Deltans, to buy arms for youths that are stricken with poverty and are ready tools to be used/influenced with money? Why do all of that in a bid to grab political power? It is simply an indication that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and his PDP-led Government are bent on going back to the Government House to satisfy their insatiable appetite and greed, and not really to serve the people. Why are these Delta State Politicians not using their own children, (most of whom are abroad schooling/working/living), to commit these election atrocities and killing of innocent voters? Why use poor locals who are poverty stricken and are ready tools to be deceived and used for election malpractices?
If their ‘intentions’ were clean and good, they would not have demonstrated such desperation to grab political power. Genuine Politicians do not engage in such evil acts just to be in Government. The Okowa PDP led Government has once again shown to Deltans that they really do not care about the people, but all they care about is the political power and privileges the Office of the Delta State Government provides. This is sheer wickedness and evil that will not go unpunished, because all the blood of the innocent that was shed by these PDP politicians and their thugs will rest on their heads and hunt them. The blood of Mr. Ediri Usitaka Gbemre for instance, will remain stained in their hands and their families.
Sooner or later, some of Delta State PDP Politicians and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa will be having various Thanksgiving Services organized by so-called Pastors and Reverend Fathers, to celebrate their so-called victory. But who are they deceiving? They surely cannot deceive God, for He cannot be deceived by any man. These PDP Politicians are acting as if power is not transient. As if they will not die one day. Or as if they will remain in Government forever, or that one day they will no longer be in Government, and then they will face the same citizenry they have treated so unjustly for years while in Government. Mother nature and karma itself has a way of catching up on those who have made their minds to always rely on evil-ways to climb societal ladder. Often times, these people will get what is coming to them.
