CNN’S UNDUE FOCUS AND MEDIA HYPE ON PRESIDENT TRUMP – NOT GOOD FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA GLOBAL IMAGE
As a lover of Democracy, Social Justice, Equity and Sustainable Development in all spheres of life, I find it appalling to note how an International Media like the CNN has been reporting its coverage news on anything concerning the United States of America (USA) President, Mr. Donald Trump, which have been so ‘partial and biased’ against the person and characters of President Trump, more than ‘actual news’ reporting. As an Internationally-recognized media house, the CNN should avoid this obvious ‘personal-attacks-style’ of reporting on/about President Trump because it is already making the CNN start losing its reputation amongst ‘global viewers’. And also, such continuous negative coverage, media hype and focus on the number one citizen of the US, is not good for the US as arguably the most powerful nation in the world.
When a news media house like the CNN, is seen as always “finding and emphasizing faults” on every news item concerning US President Trump, then it is obvious that their news cannot be trusted or relied upon by viewers. Right from the months leading to the US Presidential Campaigns and the election, to his swearing in and even up till now, President Donald Trump has become the ‘daily headline news target’ of the CNN with its ‘personal attacks’ more than any political leader across the world.  The CNN as a world-class Television News Network, should focus on all global issues in their daily news reporting on a neutral and unbiased ground, rather than concentrating on President Donald Trump - digging and emphasizing every presumed/alleged false report against him in their headlines and daily news coverage. The ‘personal-news-attacks’ against the person of President Trump and every decision/policy/move he has made since he came into power, are becoming too obvious in CNN news reporting. They make it look as if it is only President Trump that the CNN is meant to cover every day. If it is not Trump this, it will be Trump that. One begins to wonder why should CNN make its news reporting mandate to focus on just one man.
To tell us how serious this situation has become; recently, Isha Sesay resigned from CNN because of its too-much-focus on President Trump. After 13 years as one of the most recognizable faces and anchors at CNN, the astute Sierra Leonean Journalist, called it quit from CNN. Giving some of her reasons for leaving in a reported interview, she said: “…it is all so Trump-focused… For me, personally, it is not what I want to spend all my time doing… I am ready to take control of what I’m talking about – put a focus on Africa in the way I wish all international media would cover Africa.”
This should tell CNN to be broader in its news coverage. They should make their news more interesting and informative for their viewers, and not too concentrated on only one person. This makes most viewers to think CNN is probably being sponsored to fight only one man – the US President, Donald Trump. The emphasis on Trump is just simply uncalled for. The focus on Trump has become the only news item they bombard their viewers with on a daily basis. Even CNN’s Senior Correspondents/news Anchors like Amanpour and some others, have practically dedicated their news focus only on Trump and everything that concerns the US President.
Constructive criticism is good, and needed for a balanced news reporting for viewers to see world events from different perspective. But in a situation where the daily news reported are made to look as if it is only Trump they are established to cover, and such reporting are always in the negative, then something is seriously wrong somewhere. Are they saying everything about President Trump is negative? While we acknowledge the fact that President Trump has been able to ‘manage’, and even come over board - the media hype, attacks, inaccurate and sometimes damaging reports by CNN, which are often based on presumptions and assumptions - against him and his style of governance and policies, it is imperative for the CNN to avoid such ‘biased’ style of news reporting.
Let me reiterate here that I was not asked by President Trump, or the US White House Government under him, to defend him as a person and his actions. But I am only stating the obvious fact the way I see it from my own view. A reputable media outfit should be broad, neutral and credible in its news coverage. The anti-Trump news coverage evident in CNN is giving them as a global media house, a very bad image. They should make necessary adjustments in the daily news reporting so as to again regain their old credibility, which is declining tremendously as a result of their concentration on only President Trump in a bad light. How could a respected global news network like CNN stoop so low to focus its daily news coverage on one man only? The way they x-ray President Trump and everything he does in every of their daily news item, one would think the owners of CNN have something sinister against the US President as a person because it is almost like a vendetta mission. If there is no love lost between the owners of CNN and the US President, then they should not personalize their news coverage on just one man. CNN is unknowingly denting/spoiling its global image more than they think they are building it.
We advise the CNN to keep a ‘balance media reporting’ on issues affecting the US Presidency under Trump, so as to rebuild and sustain its respected global reputation.
The media’s role, especially in any Democratic Government like the US, is to report the news factually and honestly, be fair and responsible, and at the same time ‘remain impartial/neutral’ in all of its reporting and analysis of unfolding events within and around such a Democratic Government. The CNN should realize that Africans hold them in high regard as a frontrunner of International media reporting, and the people in Africa are very much interested in the events/happenings in the US Government as a ‘global leader’. But they have been observing the ‘flawed reporting’ by CNN. If the CNN should continue with what they are doing as regards news concerning US President Trump, they will lose their ‘global credibility and respect’, especially from Africans. And this will be rather unfortunate.
We therefore urge the CNN relevant authorities to make the necessary “adjustments” in its reporting and analysis of news concerning President Donald Trump and the US Government as a global leader.
